Becoming a DJ

August 21, 2014 by DJ Jargon

I really enjoy music. I was in a few bands in high school, as well as one of those kids who was in every music ensemble in high school. I went to college, and was in the marching band. I became a teacher, and helped with the marching band as well as performed in talent shows.

Music is one of those experiences meant to be shared. I was lucky to find a great group of people in college that would share new music. I was also very active on last.fm for a while, finding new music, and it became even easier with spotify.

I’ve DJ’ed mostly high school events in the past- homecoming dances and the such. As I just moved to the New Jersey/Philadelphia area, I’m trying to expand my experience with other styles of events too- weddings, clubs and other venues.

So how does one become a DJ? I’ve been mostly looking at gigs on Craigslist. It actually seems to be a really hard industry to break into- everyone wants a ton of experience, so those of us with only a little experience struggle. I’ve probably emailed 50 or 60 postings so far, all in the New Jersey, Delaware, and Greater Philadelphia areas.

It also seems like when you start from the bottom, you need to donate your time, so I’ve been looking into those style of events.

I’ll keep you posted as my resumé evolves!
